Altrincham and Sale West MP Graham Brady has welcomed the news that a Sale jam-maker has won her battle to call her product jam.
Michelle ‘Clippy’ McKenna and her partner Paul Gorman make jam from fruit grown in their back garden in Sale and sell to supermarkets like Tesco Morrison’s and Asda. They approached Graham Brady when the EU decreed that the sugar content in their product was too low for them to be able to call it jam and ordered that the small firm rename its products. Graham wrote repeatedly to Ministers to raise their case and secured a pledge over a review of jam regulations. Responding to the news of Clippy’s victory, Graham said: ‘I am delighted that Clippy and Paul have achieved a positive outcome. The EU ruling was clearly ridiculous and I know that with this victory secured, Clippy’s will continue to go from strength to strength.’
Clippy McKenna said: “I would like to thank our MP, Graham Brady, for repeatedly writing letters to government ministers regarding the daft EU Jam Laws. Graham played a vital part in getting the ball rolling and without his assistance we wouldn’t be celebrating our success today”.
