Breaking up Britain's government of stranglers
Never has the gap between politicians and people seemed greater. Buckets of rain and buckets of economic gloom are the stuff of conversation across the land, but Westminster has been tying itself in knots over the burning question of the future composition of the House of Lords. The handful of letters from my constituents on this subject has been roughly equal in number for and against. Both have been far outweighed by expressions of consternation from struggling small business owners, aghast that this seemingly arcane issue has occupied so much government energy.
